Frequently Asked Questions about Meditation

On this page you can find answers to some of the most common questions people ask us before coming on a Relax for Health course or event.

Q. I can’t sit still for any period of time, will that be a problem?

A. No, not at all, and this is not unusual. We suggest that you do some gentle stretching before you sit for meditation to help release tension from the muscles. Then, during the meditation we encourage you to let the body move if it needs to. We actively use any aches or pains in the body as signals to relax, and this in itself generally helps people sit quietly for longer than they are used to.

Q. Meditation is about stopping your thoughts; my mind is always so busy with everything that I have to do and remember, will I be able to do this?

A. Actively trying to ‘stop’ your thoughts is usually counterproductive - it just makes your mind even busier! As our meditation style encourages a no ‘efforting’ approach, we encourage you to welcome all thoughts and just let every thought actually be a reason to relax.

Q. Do I need to have experience of meditation before I attend one of your courses?

A. Previous experience is not necessary, as meditation is a completely natural process and everyone can do it. Due to the busy nature of our daily lives, we may have forgotten how to get in touch with our own inner stillness, and to begin with sitting still for even five minutes may be a challenge. However, with a little practice and commitment, our neurology quickly begins to remember.

Q. I have a physical disability, will I still be able to take part?

A. Absolutely, we believe that everyone should be able to benefit from meditation. We do encourage a little gentle stretching before meditation (similar to when you get up in the morning) but if that’s not something you are able to do, then it is not necessary. Just let us know beforehand about any specific requirements, and we will do whatever we can to accommodate.

Q. Do I have to wear special clothing?

A. Just wear something that you find comfortable.

Q. Will I have to sit cross legged or in an uncomfortable position?

A. No! With Relax for Health meditation you sit in an ordinary straight backed chair with your feet on the floor (although you may sit cross legged if you prefer). Occasionally people who find this uncomfortable prefer to lie down for meditation.

Q. Isn’t meditation religious?

A. Meditation in one form or another has formed part of most spiritual practices for thousands of years, but Relax for Health’s meditation style is not a religious one and has no connection with any religion or doctrine. It is all about learning to calm your mind and find the stillness inside of yourself, whatever your belief system.
